If you want to avoid your storage space becoming a chaotic, cluttered space where inventory is lost and staff are cramped trying to find stock in a hurry, then read on for our tips on how to maximise your storage efficiency.

1. Find your optimal layout

Assess your space critically. Are there areas that do not work for you? Is all available space used to its full potential?

Measure your space and see how your existing storage solutions, if you have any, would better fit the space you have. Then you can add to your existing storage where needed.

Rack King has a range of storage types to suit all requirements such as pallet, tyre, and cantilever racking and long span, mobile and AR shelving in an array of sizes for all purposes.

It goes without saying, that a clear out and purge of clutter and debris such as disused packaging or old inventory will help to see the space more clearly and may even make room for some new storage solutions.

2. Think vertically

Use vertical space if you can. Investing in high quality taller racking or shelving or stackable units for your storeroom or warehouse to make the most of your space and clear some floor space.

Rack King has long span shelving that will fit all storage areas. You can order one bay or up to 100 bays, depending on your requirements with either metal or wood shelving depending on what you wish to store. The height of bays can be customised to enable you to utilise the height of your space.

For smaller items, stackable bins or containers may help to subdivide inventory by category and will also use all available vertical space.

3. Use the correct storage units

Shelves or pallet racking are ideal for larger and bulkier items Rack King storage systems are versatile and are also adjustable as your needs change.

For smaller items, you can use storage bins, especially if they can be stacked to maximize the use of vertical space. Storage bins can be used in conjunction with a long span shelving system to use every inch of space.

Cantilever racking is available in up to 3 metre columns for pipe materials or timber lengths. Tyre racking to securely hold tyres can also be customised.

If you change layout frequently or wish to temporarily store seasonal items or larger volumes of

stock, then mobile storage is particularly useful as it is flexible. You can also add additional levels to long span shelving to improve your storage capacity.

4. Place your most in demand items near the front

If you have seasonal items or short date items that you wish to sell or use first, or if you just want to make your most popular items more accessible, prioritise access to these items by putting them in prime locations so that they are easy to keep track of and to grab when needed.

Out of season items or less popular stock can be placed on higher shelves or towards the back of a storeroom. In this way, time is not wasted in looking for inventory that is in high demand.

Mobile storage units, or castors added to long span shelving will allow you to move your storage from time to time as requited.

5. Place heavier items near the floor

This is an important safety consideration for staff moving items. Heavier items need to be securely shelved on or close to the floor.

Rack King pallet racking allows you to store pallets in bays up to 6 meters high and will accommodate various weights and heights.Pallet racking can be customised to fit a variety of spaces and is adjustable as your needs change.

6. Have an organised system

Ensure staff know where everything goes and that your warehouse or stockroom storage plan is not just on paper. All of Rack Kings storage systems can be customised to suit the needs of your business and adapted to suit the types of items that you need to store.

Label different storage areas if needed, and retrain staff regularly to ensure that everyone is up to date, and new staff also follow the system. This is especially important for example where you have food storage, for example, and wish to ensure that food is used in the correct date order to avoid out of date stock.

7. Consider your lighting

Lighting is important in any storage area as it is easy for items to be lost in dark recesses of your storage system and never seen again.

Lighting is also important for staff safety, and it is easier to work in good lighting making for more efficiency. Rack King shelving is open backed in order to allow you to easily see and access the contents and use the space most effectively.

8. Use a workbench

If your space allows for a workbench, add on the your storeroom to create an unpacking or landing area for new stock to be inventoried and unpacked.

If you sell online, it is also a good idea to have a central location where orders are fulfilled with the correct tools and packaging to hand such as printing and labelling equipment.

Workbenches are heavy duty and designed for manual labour, able to withstand working loads up to 450kg. You can also add a shelf under the work surface to provide additional storage and castors to allow for mobility and flexibility.
